Carolina Vespers - Stagmomantis carolina - male

Carolina Vespers - Stagmomantis carolina - Male
Mobile (Dog River), Mobile County, Alabama, USA
September 7, 2008
Size: ~40 mm
Due to it's slender body and respectful size, I'm thinking Carolina Mantis.

I have two like this = want to know more
We caught one about a month and a half ago, it shed once and has more than doubled in size. We feed it crickets from the pet store. Ive heard they need a varied diet, but that's all they seem to sell there as far as insects go. I found another one yesterday, it looks to be the same. If these are males, can I safely put them in the same cage or not? I've gotten conflicting information. Thanks!

Never Reared Mantids
I mostly rear butterflys and haven't tried mantids YET. I believe you have to separate the females but the males are cool together ... just good ole boys. Varying opinions aside, there is one sure way to find out.

my good ole boys
Well I put them together, and they sparred a bit but they are coexisting. My husband is sure the new one is a female, it is larger - but I dont know if that's because it's older. I wish it were easier to tell male/female apart. I did learn not to put the whole box of crickets in with them at once, our first mantis ate about 30 of them in 3 days....pig. Thanks for replying!
