cricket at 10k ft,?
San Jacinto State park forest, , Riverside County, California, USA
September 6, 2008
Size: approx. 1 1/2 inches
taken at over 10k ft. elevation, temp was approx. 70 degrees, bug moved fairly slow, had really long (may 3-4 inch antennae, although this is probably normal for crickets.
The area had under brush, granite rocks & some scattered pine & fir trees.

Katydid male.
This is actually a shield-backed katydid, and a male, but one that may well be endemic to that area (found 'only' there). I'll see if I can solicit a more expert opinion for you. This is without a doubt a new species for the guide. Thanks for sharing!

cool!
I have only seen one or 2 other ones up there, never seen anything quite like this either.
Looks like I might be famous, maybe we could say it was 3 feet across & really get some attention.
Kiddin aside, I appreciate everyone's feedback, as yesterday is the 1st time at this site, it will be useful in the future, as I'm a professional guide & amateur photographer.

New species period
Jeff Cole said "That's an undescribed species in the Nedubinae. It's supposed to be a new genus also, but my phylogeny shows it is an Aglaothorax. Regardless there is no published name for this thing yet."

Very cool find!

I thought it was just a mole
I thought it was just a mole cricket with mites.

Thanks.
Yeah, I just received a reply from another katydid expert who says the same thing. So, to subfamily it goes for now.

Jeff says he's collected thes
Jeff says he's collected these things when it's snowing!
