Golden Silk Spider - Nephila clavipes - Nephila clavipes - female

Golden Silk Spider - Nephila clavipes - Nephila clavipes - Female
Milton, Santa Rosa County, Florida, USA
August 30, 2008
Size: 3" legspan
I found this gorgeous, huge (>3" legspan) Golden Silk Spider while visiting my parents in Florida (Panhandle area) over Labor Day weekend. It was interesting to see why the spider had a golden web. Upon closer inspection, I noticed that the silk was white like all other spiders' silk, it was the tiny droplets of the sticky substance that was gold in color. She had quite a following of "admirers", there were 5 much smaller males (~1" legspan) hanging around her web. There were also several small Dewdrop spiders - Argyrodes elevatus on her web. These are kleptoparasites, they steal small insects that get caught in the larger spider's web (and hope they don't become a meal themselves!).
