Scarab Beetle? - Cotinis nitida

Scarab Beetle? - Cotinis nitida
Illinois, USA
June 28, 2005
A reader of my web site emailed me wondering if this was a Magicicada. I told her it wasn't but promised to ID it for her. I'm thinking maybe some type of Rainbow Scarab but again I'm no expert. She says she has holes all in her yard and these seem to have emerged from the ground. Thanks for any help.

Green June Bug
See Cotinis nitida - the common name is deceptive - not related to the 'real' June Bugs. The larva are turf root feeders and often emerge in numbers flying low over the ground in broad arcing flights. There is alot of variation in color - from all green, to almost all brown - usually some combination of both. Just Google this - lots of info since they're pests.

Many Thanks Phillip
I thought it was perhaps a June bug but the ventral view threw me. I will tell her.
