I have never seen a fly like this but after looking at this DB it looks like this is a flesh fly? It was a very curious and friendly fly...lol.

Your family ID is correct, and it is probably the genus Sarcophaga. Given where they can hang out when not basking in the sun, I would rather they not be 'too' friendly:-)
