This kind of looks like a weevil to me but not really. I'm not sure; perhaps not. I'm pretty sure though that someone here will know. :)

Looks to us more like something in the Chrysomelidae
maybe Galerucinae such as
. John Watts and Rob Westerduijn have been doing a great job of identifying these guys, so you should get a definitive answer soon.

Thank you
Thank you for the correction and for confirming John and Jane's idea. I've moved the image to the species page. Is it odd that this beetle lives here even though we don't have any elm trees in Newfoundland?

not very critical on hostplant
I suspect there will some elms somewhere, but maybe it feeds on other trees as well. HereĀ“s some info I found on the internet:
The elm leaf beetle is often considered as muchof an indoor nuisance as a garden pest since large numbers of adults migrate into homesseeking a protected place to overwinter. Outdoors, both adults and larvae feed on the emerging leaves of virtually all species of elmtrees, leaving skeletonized foliage in their wake. Repeated severe infestations can markedly weaken a host tree, making it susceptible to other insects and diseases.

Pyrrhalta vs. Tricholochmaea
Just a short question. When looking around for a bit more information, I found
this pdf document
that discusses leaf beetles in the Atlantic provinces of Canada. It says that a Pyrrhalta viburni specimen was collected in Newfoundland very near when I photographed this beetle. It also goes on to talk about how to distinguish Pyrrhalta from Tricholochmaea. Are you OK with this being Tricholochmaea and not Pyrrhalta?
