Prairie Spider - Araneus trifolium

Prairie Spider - Araneus trifolium
Thurston County
August 27, 2008
Size: abdomen ~75-100mm
This spider was found in the prairies of Western Washington, specifically, on Fort Lewis, Thurston County, Washington, in a training area known as "pacemaker". The spider disliked being oriented upward, but instead far preferred to cling to the underside of a stem or leaf while not posing for photographs. I found no associated web.

Araneus trifolium - Shamrock Orbweaver, in the guide here

Araneus trifolium
Thanks for the id. It clearly looks like an orb weaver. I was a bit thrown by missing web.
