Size: 1" and larger in length
These guys are flying (riding the wind is more like it) through (south to north) by the thousands. Possibly as many as 10,000 + a day come through. They do not stop for anything. This one accidentally flew into a small outbuilding and tried to go out of a window. I shot this and ushered it back out the door. Unfortunately IH-10 is about a mile to my north and what passes through my place has to run that gauntlet.

American Snout Butterfly

Why
Thanks. Why are they headed north when winter is coming? The wind is carrying them but they seem to be going that direction as well.

Don't worry about them
They Hibernate in winter as adults.
The mottled pattern on the underside helps it to hide and camoflauge in nooks and crannies etc.
I think the main part of that pattern is to match tree trunks.

One other intresting thing I know is that they mate at night.
