Blue Skipper - Urbanus proteus

Blue Skipper - Urbanus proteus
South Rockwood, Monroe County, Michigan, USA
February 9, 2008
Size: 1"
I took this photo of an unknown skipper in my backyard when trying to photograph hummingbirds.

OMG
I'm so jealous!! That one has been on my wish list to see since I got my first moth book and saw a photo...I'm hoping maybe when I'm in Mexico I'll get to see one, or at least one of the other really colorful skippers.

Skipper
Wow, I take it that this skipper is a rare one to see here in southeast Michigan. If Mexico doesn't work out you could always pull up a chair and set by my butterfly bushes and watch for another to show up :-). Seriously after seeing dozens of silver skippers at a time on my butterfly bushes this one was so unusual I had to get a shot of it I am glad that a least a couple photos came out good enough to share with others. Thanks for the comment on this butterfly.

Nice shot of a beautiful butterfly

Long-tailed Skipper
Tom,

Thanks for the ID on this skipper. Is it often seen in southeast Michigan or is it a rarity here? I will have a look at the postings for the Long-tail ASAP.

Thanks,
Dale

It's normal range is the southeastern U.S.
In the fall some individuals wander north. We usually get one found in Massachusetts once every 2 or 3 years. So this was a really good find in Michigan.
