Im assuming this is mature as it was certainly flying. Could anyone tell me the species? The eyes are particularly beautiful.

American bird grasshopper.
These are nice shots of a Schistocerca americana. If they aren't normally seen in your area, the recent hurricanes could have driven them farther north than usual.
