Another Photuris? dorsal view - Pseudozonitis labialis

Another Photuris? dorsal view - Pseudozonitis labialis
World Birding Center HQ at Bentsen-Rio Grande Valley State Park, Hidalgo County, Texas, USA
April 13, 2008
Something about this beetle was bugging me, and I tried like heck to make it into a Cantharid, or Cerambycid, or some other family. But closest match still seems like Photuris...

Moved from Pseudozonitis.

labialis? roseomaculatis? or still unknown?
Revisiting some pics a few years later. The Guide now has many more photos of this genus. This critter looks very different than every confirmed photo of P. longicornis, looking particularly at the pronotum . I still can't find any images of the other previously documented LRGV species, P. labialis. However, in the meantime Mike Quinn documented P. roseomaculatis from Cameron County, the next county west of Hidalgo; and his photos of that critter do resemble this one much more than any other member of the genus does. Vassili, think you could solicit Dr. Pinto's opinion on the matter?

Moved
Moved from Photuris. So I was *right* to be suspicious and try to make this into something other than a firefly! Just did not look in the right family. Thanks again Vassili!

Pseudozonitis (Meloidae)
pls move!

next level?
So, the Cameron County list cites two species from this genus: P. labialis (Enns), and P. longicornis (Horn). Any hope of refining the ID further, or not possible from photos alone? I found images on-line claiming to be of longicornis here and
here. But can find no images of labialis...

You mean move the 'image,' right?:-)
LOL, I'm sure he's not telling you to leave Bugguide....What a spectacular firefly mimic, though. No wonder you were fooled!

of course i meant the picture... how awkward of me... :-]
i sincerely apologize, Dr. Rose.

:--P
No apology necessary, I knew what you meant. And don't worry Eric, it'll take plastic explosive to get me out of the Guide....
