Found this cocoon tightly tied to the tulip poplar tree in our backyard. Not sure what it is. I did find one that had hatched already and the cocoon was a crispy shell and those strands holding it to the tree are tough!

This is the pupa (chrysalis) of a swallowtail butterfly. A cocoon is the silken envelope around some moth pupae.
