Hesperapis regularis - Hesperapis regularis - male

Hesperapis regularis - Hesperapis regularis - Male
Hastings Reserve, Monterey County, California, USA
June 6, 2008
In Calochortus sp.
Wing venation and general appearance makes me think this is a Hesperapis.

plant in photograph
Checked the Hastings Reserve web site and find Large-flowered Star Tulip (Calochortus uniflorus) is known from the site, and that is what the plant in the photograph appears to be. One of the easier members of this genus for the garden.

yes, a Hesperapis male
habitat?

size?

nearby flowers?

Thanks, John -
habitat: small grassy area at edge of Oak woodland.

size: ~ 9 mm

nearby flowers: Clarkia purpurea, Phacelia imbricata; Clarkia unguiculata perhaps 150 meters away.

Could this be H. regularis? I photographed a female ~ 20 minutes earlier in C. unguiculata.

most likely H. regularis
being relatively large and associated with Clarkia

Thanks, John,
for the follow-up.
