Crioscolia on Jackass Clover Borrego Sink 14 Oct 2008

Crioscolia on Jackass Clover Borrego Sink 14 Oct 2008
Borrego Springs, San Diego County, California, USA
October 14, 2003
This scoliid was nectaring at Jackass Clover (Wislizenia refracta) at the Borrego Sink. Possibly it is Crioscolia flammicoma? [With only 7 scoliids in California and key in hand, one would think identifications would be easy. Not so!]

Male.
This specimen is a male. The females probably look radically different if they are like most scoliids. Either Crioscolia or Trielis is my best guess.

Male
Thanks so much, Eric. Knowing this is a male is a big help. I am going to post another very different wasp I photographed on the same day also on Jackass Clover. It is very different looking. Who knows, it may turn out to be the female.
