Sassacus vitis - female

Sassacus vitis - Female
Licking County, Ohio, USA
November 1, 2007
Size: 4.9mm
First and only record of this species in Ohio, and possibly the furthest north-eastern North America record as well. Makes me wish I had gotten better photos. :-(

Found under a rock and photographed in captivity.

Ron,
"hah!" is right! I think I showed them Kansas folks how we roll here in Ohio. Heck, this beastie probably fled from Kansas as a spiderling after evolution was outlawed there.

Herschel,
Okay, I'm fairly happy with the ones I posted, but I usually like to have a bigger selection to choose from. Over 90 photos and I have just a handful worth keeping, and only these four are worth using for ID. Photographing captives in a studio doesn't give me much room for excuses.

As long as they're alive, you have an excuse.
I once remember someone - almost certainly Dr. Ascher - asking:

"How hard can it be to photograph a dead bee?"

Better Photos?
Don't make me come up there and slap you around.

Great find!
Species info page now needs revision. Kansas, hah!

There are tons of these in SoCal, but they can be hard to find and harder to shoot.
