Explanation of Names
Latin alula little wing, diminutive of ala wing.
Identification
alula noun, plural alulae - a term used for different smaller, winglike structures found on the wings themselves:
an expanded axillary membrane of the wing found in some diptera and coleoptera
a similar lobe attached to the base of the wing, also in some diptera and coleoptera
in some diptera, a membranous lobe above the haltere, more specifically called the calpyter.
