beetle invasion - Oncideres rhodosticta - Male Female
Pima County, Arizona, USA
September 20, 2008
After a heavy monsoon season, our foothills neighborhood has been taken over at night by these beetles. Many appear as pairs, with the one on top (male?) having longer antennae. The birds that normally pick up the hoppers and japanese beetles at daybreak ignore these beetles.

Mesquite girdlers.
This is the second year in a row we have been deluged with these longhorned beetles (Oncideres rhodosticta). They flock to lights at night. They are responsible for being the natural "pruners" of mesquite trees. Females girdle a twig, then lay an egg beyond the scar. The larva that hatches bores in the dying limb.
