FLY MIMICKING A BEE - SPECIES? - Laphria thoracica

FLY MIMICKING A BEE - SPECIES? - Laphria thoracica
Greenville, Providence County, Rhode Island, USA
June 28, 2008
Size: Bumblebee size = large
I know this is a fly mimicking a bee. But I don't know its species.

Laphria
One of the bumblebee mimic robber flies. This is L. thoracica. One of the finer mimics. And one of only about 45 robber species I have on my Rhode Island list. Keep sending shots from your state. And I like the size=large estimate. Usually this species does not make it to the 1 inch marker which would be a big Laphria or a big bumblebee.
