Ant With Spider Legs? - Odontomachus

Ant With Spider Legs? - Odontomachus
Beverly Hills, Citrus County, Florida, USA
September 25, 2008
Size: very small
It has a stinger on 1 end of its body, 6 legs (looks like spider legs), real big head with what looks to be maybe like a mouth that sticks out in front of the head. Its bit or stung my son twice and left red spots with like a red puncture wound in the center of the mark. September 25, 2008 (Autumn). Would like to know what it is.

Trapjaw ant it is

Trapjaw ant!
Neat animals. Genus is Odonotmachus, not sure which species is out there in Florida.

I cropped this
to help with ID. The original image had a finger at the edge, which (depending on the size of the finger) makes me think the size of this specimen is about 10mm or less. Calling it "very small" is rather too subjective to be helpful, I'm afraid : )

To me it looks like a carpenter ant missing its abdomen, but maybe someone else will comment.
