pygmy grasshopper - Tetrix ornata - male

pygmy grasshopper - Tetrix ornata - Male
Adel, Dallas County, Iowa, USA
September 23, 2008
Size: 8 mm
I found this grasshopper in a dry, rocky area around some bushes in the backyard. The bushes are near a wet spot, though. It was a hot afternoon. I haven't observed it flying. I believe it's a female, but may be mistaken on this. After looking through the guide I found no matches that had been identified.

This is a male
I'm keeping it in the house. He likes algea, but know that it is snowy and single digits out here this is impossible to come by. Apple seems to be an acceptible substitute.

He ate lettuce most of the winter, then I found some moss growing and put that in his cage. He ate that until algea started growing again. He died April 28, 2009 and joined my insect collection.

Moved
Moved from Pygmy Grasshoppers.

beautiful pattern
Finally getting back to this one. It looks like Tetrix ornata. I need to look at more of these before I can tell gender at a glance, but having said that, it looks male to me - rather slender. I can't quite tell if that's a piece of female ovipositor or a male subgenital plate at the tip of the abdomen, but I'm leaning toward the later.
