Hard to say...
...the reddish coloration suggests Prionus californicus, but the relatively broader pronotum suggests maybe P. heroicus.

What characteristic should I look at to confirm it's ID?

 
californicus...
...just needed to check my literature at home. I wasn't sure whether the pronotal width was sufficient for heroicus (it isn't) - the color is certainly right for californicus, and also the males of that species have the external processes of the antennal segments more pronounced than heroicus.
