Grass-carrying Wasp - Isodontia elegans

Grass-carrying Wasp - Isodontia elegans
West Chicago Prairie, DuPage County, Illinois, USA
July 1, 2005
Size: 25mm

Muy bien
Thanks Eric. How do you keep track of this stuff!?
(Can someone make a guide entry for this species? Thanks)

Done.
And moved to guide. Beautiful image.

Isodontia elegans.
Very nice portrait of a "grass-carrier" wasp, Isodontia elegans. At least part of that genus needs revision. I collected this species in Cincinnati in the 1990s, and at that time it was only known from the western half of the U.S. The leading authority I consulted didn't know what to make of it, but I suspect "elegans" will eventually be a synonym of I. mexicana, or vice versa.

I. mexicana
Hi Eric. Thanks for that ID, but I'm confused. I found an image of Isodontia mexicana HERE and it's all black.

Color varies.
Color patterns alone are not enough to be considered a separate species. Will be interesting to see what happens with this genus (or rather the subgenus, Murrayella).
