Melanoplus sanguinipes? - Melanoplus sanguinipes - female

Melanoplus sanguinipes? - Melanoplus sanguinipes - Female
Blue Mountain/Deer Park, Olympic National Park, Clallam County, Washington, USA
September 11, 2008
In reviewing photos, I found these, which I took to be Melanoplus sanguinipes.
Then I noticed that the distinctive pattern on the head, which I've seen on most photos, was not on one specimen:

Looking back, I can't see the pattern on males in mating pairs, so maybe this is a sexual dimporphism.

Odds are
good that both are M. sanguinipes. See the comments under the other one. This one is very unlikely to be M. femurrubrum, because that species is rarely if ever so maculate as this one. However, there are other species that are possibilities as well. Having said that, it looks typical of M. sanguinipes. I do not noticed any differences in pattern between genders, but the pattern and coloring is highly variable in both.

Both are females.
