crab apple nit - Carpophilus hemipterus

crab apple nit - Carpophilus hemipterus
Nashua, Hillsborough County, New Hampshire, USA
September 22, 2008
Size: about 5 mm
This is the first one I've found of this distinctively marked species. It was in one of scores of rotting crab apples I pulled apart beneath the tree. Due to its larger pale patches I instantly realized it was a new species for me. Compares well to images by Tim Moyer and Joyce Gross, the latter of which was IDed by Nitidulidae specialist Andrew Cline.
