Metallic Syrphid? - Eristalinus aeneus

Metallic Syrphid? - Eristalinus aeneus
Mountain View Baylands, Santa Clara County, California, USA
September 28, 2008
Size: ~ 1 cm
This fly looks like a dark, metallic syrphid, although I can't see the wing veins too well - looks like our images of Eristalinus aeneus?

Eristalinus for sure and I'd say you have species right too.
Most posts comment on the eyes, rather than the sheen. For syrphids with unusual eyes, check Eristalinus first.

Thanks, Ron!
Noticed the eyes but thought they were "worn" at first - guess they are characteristic of the genus?

Those "golf ball eyes" as one contributor termed them...
are more specific to species than to genus. (I have one so-eyed fly IDed here as Eristalinis sp.)

My favorite eyes are those of E. taeniops: http://nathistoc.bio.uci.edu/diptera/Eristalinus.htm

Cool!
Nice images! Those look more like tabanid eyes!

Moving to species page, as those two species are the only ones around, according to the info. page.
