Robber Fly (Archilestris magnificus) eating Red Rock Skimmer (Paltothemis lineatipes) - Archilestris magnificus
W of Hwy. 92, Hereford, Cochise County, Arizona, USA
September 29, 2008
Back yard garden, 5010' elev. Grassland/oak interface.
The robber fly is regular in the yard. The dragonfly-a stream species-is rare in the yard as we are some distance from running water. The robber fly is hanging from the leaf of a yucca.

Great shot!
I'd been wondering if they could tackle large prey like dragonflies- now I know!

I am happy
To have Laphria saffrana, Laphria affinis and Diogmites angustipennis in the yard. But I would trade them for these robbers.

Fantastic!
Fantastic!
