Northern California Coast - Ergates spiculatus

Northern California Coast - Ergates spiculatus
Fort Bragg, CA, Mendocino County, California, USA
September 30, 2008
Size: 2 1/4 inches
This large brown beetle was found upside-down on the cement outside my office. It was alive, apparently, as it moved it's legs when I turned it right side up. It did not try to walk away, however. Missing lower part of hind leg.

Ponderous borer
An alternate common name (from Insects of the Pacific Northwest by Peter and Judy Haggard): Spined Woodborer

Another individual was found nearby today. Must be the time of year.
