Insect ID - is it a Ichneumon? - Trogus pennator
Municipality of Bayham, Elgin, Ontario, Canada
September 25, 2008
Size: about 1-inch
Insect on Hop Tree leaf injecting egg into small caterpillar of Black Swallow Tail butterfly, the very small caterpillar is not visible. The ovipositor is curled under the wasp.
It was found along the north shore of Lake Erie near Port Burwell, ON. It was a beautiful warm day. Time was 02:00 pm.
Can you tell us exactly what this insect is called?

Moved
Moved from Trogus.

Agree with Eric...
There are several Trogus species that specialize on swallowtail larvae, so we will have to leave this at the genus level for now.

Yes.
Female ichneumon, likely the genus Trogus, among the very few ichneumons that are recognizable to genus from images alone. The great amount of detail on the host helped immensely as well.
