Plains Lubber with Mites?? - Brachystola magna - Female
Sierra Vista, Cochise County, Arizona, USA
October 2, 2008
Size: unknown
There were patches of these red parasites on both sides of this female. Could be mites but don't see any legs on them. This female was smaller than the others seen today.

Red Mites
Likely Eutrombidium locustarum which live primarily on the wings and eggs of grasshoppers. This infestation probably started when the Grasshopper was young (perhaps even from the time of hatching?). They are clustered where the wings would be, but it appears that there isn't much left of the wings. They Could be likened to Ticks, since they suck the blood of the Grasshopper.

I frequently find on to a few on an individual Grasshopper, most often on the hind wings of a long-winged species, but I've never seen this many on one hopper before.
