Jerusalem cricket.
Not a true cricket, but a relative. Not dangerous, mostly nocturnal. Can be host to something called a "horsehair worm" that drives the insect into water. The horsehair worm then emerges, awaiting its next host. Not sure if dogs are a host of these worms....
