Chinese Mantid - Tenodera sinensis - female

Chinese Mantid - Tenodera sinensis - Female
Decatur, Van Buren County, Michigan, USA
October 1, 2008
Size: 10 cm
Bill and I went to his Sister's house in Decatur, MI and she had Chinese Mantids everywhere. They were in some type of evergreen shrubs around her house. I figure it must be mating season because you would see three in this shrub and two in another, etc. I have never seen a mantid in my garden so we captured a male and female and brought them back to Battle Creek, MI with us. I took pictures inside and my normal background for spiders and such was not tall enough so sorry about the lousy background in some pictures. She was very cooperative for pictures and seemed to love sitting on Bill's head. I tried to put up pictures that show some of the different colors on different body parts and also the end of the abdomen (ventral) for differentiating between male and female (besides size).
