Midge???

Midge???
Moccasin Lake, Winston, Douglas County, Georgia, USA
October 7, 2008
Size: about 20 mm
Not sure if this is a midge or not, it was rather large, amost 3/4 inch in length. I spotted it as it was flying and lit on the underside of a leaf. I was able to slowly turn the leaf over and obtain the above photographs. It finally had enough and flew off. Anyone have an idea as to what it is? I've searched all through BG and came up empty.
