Megacyllene comanchei - Megacyllene angulifera

Megacyllene comanchei - Megacyllene angulifera
McNenny State Fish Hatchery, Upper Mirror Lake, Lawrence County, South Dakota, USA
September 23, 2008
Crawling on the ground on steep, eroded red clay slopes in shortgrass prairie. I saw several of these at this site and at two other sites in extreme northwestern Nebraska - all crawling on the ground in a most unMegacyllene-like way. If truly Megacyllene comanchei, this would represent a 700-mile range extension from south-central Kansas (itself a significant northern range extension from the type locality in Texas - see MacRae & Rice 2007). However, it has been suggested that M. comanchei is not distinct from M. angulifera. Further discussion about this can be found on my website, Beetles In The Bush.

recently synonymized with angulifera
see Hart & Ivie's 2013 paper; should we move to M. angulifera or continue to keep distinct?
