? Giant misquito or type of fly ?

? Giant misquito or type of fly ?
Las Vegas, NV, Clark County, Nevada, USA
October 7, 2008
Size: about 1 inch long
I saw this bug at the park and could not figure out what it was. I looks a bit like a giant misquito that is around 1 inch in length. On closer examination of the pictures you can see it is eating another bug in one of the photos I took. Any help in figuring out what this is and what it does would be greatley appreciated.

Cool shots of a female robber
Cool shots of a female robber fly. I've never seen one hanging out by the water's edge like this. I'm curious about the behavior this ole girl was exhibiting. In this shot, she looks like she's standing on some foam.
