This looked like a wasp, until I saw what looks like strange front legs.

Interestingly
while the examples from other states are showing dark and light banding on the abdomen, the coloring of this one from AZ is just like that of one of our biggest and most aggressive AZ paper wasps, Polistes comanchus

So, this mantidfly mimics the paper wasp? In order to feed on it?

I think you may have an example of Climaciella brunnea
