Canthidium? - Onthophagus hecate

Canthidium? - Onthophagus hecate
Lawrence, Douglas County, Kansas, USA
September 15, 2008
Size: 6mm
I think this is Canthidium or Ateuchus, for a few reasons... The 3rd labial palp seems distinct, ruling out Onthophagus, there are 7 elytral striae ruling out Copris and the basal posterior tarsomere is elongate and rectangular. It doesn't seem to be particularly expanded at the apical end, so I think it might be Canthidium instead of Ateuchus.

Next, someone will tell me that it's neither and I'll feel inadequate and go to sleep :-)

Onthophagus hecate to me. I've been known to be wrong, though.

I agree
pronotal granulation and overall look fits with Onthophagus, and the horn size points to a male minor.

Well... true to my word, I feel inadequate and I think I'll go take a nap..

Thanks for the help, both of you! I'm slowly learning these things, but keys are hard to use! Especially for something this small!

Is there an easier way to separate out Onthophagus from the other genera?

Looking at the photos of Onthophagus, I'd say you're right. Certainly isn't Atecuhus
