spider - Castianeira longipalpa

spider - Castianeira longipalpa
Port Townsend, Jefferson County, Washington, USA
October 11, 2008

Moved
Moved from Spiders.

It has the cephalothorax shape of
Sergiolus, but the legs of Castianeira! These always drive us crazy! We're leaning toward the latter, but ...

Sergiolus vs. Castianeira
Ok so the way I've been telling these apart is that Sergiolus has visible spinnerets. Which would make this in an easy ID to Castianeira. However, I like to match the rest of the spider's body parts to that ID as well and one thing bothers me about this one. It has quite a pointy head (agree with you on this), which is a better match to Sergiolus. I wonder if Rod would recognize this one? I think I'll email him.

"Given the locality, this would almost have to be Castianeira
longipalpa. No other Castianeira is known from the Oly. Peninsula. The
shape of all body parts is wrong for Sergiolus (Poecilochroa) and
besides neither WA member of that genus has this many transverse
bands."
