Feathers on a Fly's Leg? - Trichopoda

Feathers on a Fly's Leg? - Trichopoda
Baton Rouge - BREC Bluebonnet Swamp Nature Center, East Baton Rouge Parish, Louisiana, USA
October 10, 2008
Seems to have feathers on its legs.
(If these were dinosaurs, I would claim a link in evolution to birds.)
These make its profile in flight quite distinctive.
Some red on the back part especially when viewed from underneath.
In some lighting these are beautiful.
The red can almost glow and the wings are very handsome.
Hope I can find some more a get a better picture.

Feeding on flowers of Climbing Hempweed.
