Mating Behavior - Agelenopsis - male - female

Mating Behavior - Agelenopsis - Male Female
Springfield, Calhoun County, Michigan, USA
September 11, 2008
We had been keeping an eye on this female for a couple of weeks or so when we saw another spider with her. Bill ran and got the camera and began shooting. These are the best of the lot and we wish that they were better. The photos are in order of events. First photo the female is on her side and underneath the male, where she stays through the whole event, and his palp is full. Second photo he turns away from the camera. Third photo he fills his palp. Fourth photo he begins to turn back to his original postion with full palp. Fifth photo he is back in position. Sixth photo is closer of the palp. Did not get any photos with insertion but I don't know how that would be missed as Bill just kept shooting. It was probably not visible with the positioning of all involved. The female's home is on a hardy begonia leaf which has a downward slant but she has her funnel in the small cupped area where the leaf meets the stem.
