large brown moth for ID - Catocala

large brown moth for ID - Catocala
Ray County, Missouri, USA
October 13, 2008
Size: about 2.5"
This moth was sleeping on my window screen this morning, and it is by far the largest moth we've seen here, besides the Cecropia we found this year. He was about 2.5-3" with wings folded, I did not see him with wings spread so I could not get an accurate wingspan.

I'm not even sure where to start looking for species, so I am hoping someone here has an idea??

Catocala
This certainly is a Catocala sp. and may be Catocala retecta . Perhaps others will comment.

Yes, definitely an Underwing, thank you
Now I just have to research and figure out which one! I do hope someone else recognizes him and can let us know for sure which one.

Thanks so much!
