Acmaeodera tubulus vs. neglecta - Acmaeodera

Acmaeodera tubulus vs. neglecta - Acmaeodera
Victoria Glades Natural Area, Jefferson County, Missouri, USA
June 19, 2008
Here's a good comparative photo of Acmaeodera tubulus (broadly distributed in eastern North America) versus A. neglecta, which is distributed primarily in the southcentral U.S. north to Missouri. The lower left individual is A. neglecta and the others are A. tubulus - note the coarser and larger punctures of the elytra on A. neglecta, and the irregular "C"-shaped markings on the elytra, caused by longitudinal coalescence of the humeral and premedial spots, is also typical of this species. Both species are among the earliest spring buprestid species to appear, but in Missouri A. neglecta is most often associated with glade habitats, while A. tubulus is a habitat generalist.

Typical?
Ted, I'm not at all certain there is anything typical about either of these, especially Acmaeodera neglecta.

Why do you say that?
I've seen hundreds of individuals of both of these species in Missouri over the past 30 years. The ones in this photo are about as representative as they get.

I say...
...that you are being too provincial. Missouri, maybe...but you did not so restrict these species distributionally in your comment. Move to Texas, there this group is a mess!
