cocoon vs. chrysalis - Spilosoma virginica

Interestingly, the other two caterpillars made chrysali, while this one ended up with a cocoon. This one created its cocoon between this glass and a leaf (I removed the leaf). The other two didn't really have a protected space to hide, so is that why they ended up with smooth chrysali?
