Size: 18? mm
The color reminds me of some Paroxya. Wings are short. Could it be immature this late in the year? Looks like two small cerci at the back.

It's at the boundary between mowed and unmowed parts of a field. Water is nearby (Cayuga Lake and streams).

Chorthippus curtipennis
A very dark female, and quite adult. She will be done for this year as soon as it gets too cold for her. The way the abdomen is enlarged and extended indicates that she is full of eggs.

The way the wings are folded and bear a complete network of veins indicates adulthood.
