Mydas Fly
According to The Audubon Society Field Guide to North American Insects, the Mydas Fly adult eats caterpillars, other flies, bees and true bugs.

Mydas
Fools many. Mydas fly. Alert and territorial. The fly guys still argue over whether the adults eat anything, just nectar and pollen or live prey. I have yet to see one take prey. I have seen them on flowers before. They often fly sorties at other flying insects but I think that is just the territorial instinct.

Mydas clavatus
Just adding to specific comments of others, I believe this is Mydas clavatus.

Mydas clavatus
Thanks to all who commented. Many thanks also for the complete scientific name. This is what I needed to post this on Merchants Millpond State Park's species list.

Will move to guide
Everyone's satisfied with this, I'll move it to the guide.
