Bellevue, NE, Sarpy County, Nebraska, USA
July 6, 2005
Size: Approximately 1 1/8"
This wasp (two photos) was nectaring on Virginia Mountain Mint. It is all black with bluish wings. The noted size does not include antennae.

Great black wasp.
Nice habitat shot of Sphex pennsylvanica, the "great black wasp." Females paralyze katydids and stock them in a burrow as food for their offspring. Each wasp lives independently, and they are not at all aggressive.
