Syrphid Fly - Eristalis dimidiata - male

Syrphid Fly - Eristalis dimidiata - Male
Ozark Mountains, Searcy County, Arkansas, USA
October 14, 2008
Size: 15mm

Syrphid -
probably something in the genus Eristalis?

Thanks, Ken
Eristalis dimidiata looks promising to me, but I've been stung on Syrphid ID's too many times to assume that's correct.

Eristalis (Eoseristalis) dimidiata
Similar but rare species E. stipator is smaller and flies May-September. Eristalis (Eoseristalis) dimidiata flies April-October - see additional details at canacoll.org.

...
Thank you for confirming the ID and providing the link with additional information.

Seconded.
There are tons of Eristalis flying in SoCal currently. Many look like this. I may post some, in hopes for an ID, but these are tough!

Well, at least we can say confidently...
It's a boy!

...
And, no doubt, spends most of its time using those big eyes looking for girls.
