some kind of
field cricket in the genus gryllus.
The reason he is wingless is because he is still a nymph. he will not get wings until he becomes an adult after 4 or 5 molts

Does this mean there are no external buds at any pre-adult stage?

This is a young nymph
There are 5 molts that they go through (or instars) and each time they molt, they begin to show more developed legs and wings (and females get an ovipositor). So this one is just really young.

I had no idea until now that there are different kinds of field crickets... They all look the same to me, and I've heard someone else here say that some can only be separated by their song
