Centiped - Scolopendra polymorpha

Centiped - Scolopendra polymorpha
Patagonia Creek Preserve, St Cruz County, Arizona, USA
October 18, 2008
Size: 4-5in
We saw several on sandy paths. This one was digging a hole: mostly scratching like a dog, then moving the debris by moving its front end. Pea-sized rocks were handed backwards under the body from leg pair to leg pair, bucket-brigade-style.

Yes...
This is the desert or tiger centipede (Scolopendra polymorpha) which is common in the Southwest. They are not particularly aggressive, but they will bite if provoked.
