I would have liked to get an image or two of the cricket before it met its demise.

Cricket is far more interesting: a "scaly cricket."

Ants...
Two segmented clubbed antennae and petiole, three clypeal teeth, shiny darkened gaster, aggressive swarming nature - looks like red imported fire ants to me (Solenopsis invicta).

False honey ants can still be found in areas that fire ants are because false honey ant forage at colder temperatures and mostly dormant over the summer months.
