Bombardier Beetle - Brachinus vulcanoides

Bombardier Beetle - Brachinus vulcanoides
Plum Island, Essex County, Massachusetts, USA
October 21, 2008
Size: 11mm
I found this one under a rock adjacent to a pond about 100 yards from the ocean.

Another new one!
These bombadier beetles are one of my favorite genus, and I'm glad they're getting identified. Thanks Peter.

Brachinus vulcanoides
based on my microscopic examination of this specimen. Helpful clues to identity include location (northeastern USA), the color pattern of antennae and an especially deep constriction of the pronotum. Hidden in this image are protibiae with smooth surfaces, i.e., the absence of minute linear ridges seen in similar species. Thanks Tom.
